There are several treatment systems that have been applied to the treatment of black water and gray water. Sewerage systems are usually constructed in urban areas, where houses, office buildings are concentrated, collecting wastewater through a piping network system and treating the wastewater in a centralized manner at a sewage treatment plant that is usually located in areas downstream of rivers or near the seacoast. Johkasou systems are constructed or insttalled on site for a house, a building or a small community.

Johkasou systems were primarily developed and introduced to help people installing flush toilets in unseweed areas. Rural sewerage systems are introduced primarily in farming villages for domestic wastewater treatment. These systems, wastewater from each house is collected through a piping system and then delivered to a centralized treatment plant for treatment with the final effluent typically being discharged into small, local rivers. A rural sewerage system is usually designed to serve hundreds to thousands of people by treating domestic wastewater and discharging rainwater from a village. Since a rural sewerage system receives comparatively less amount of wastewater than that of a sewerage system,the effluent has little impact on the water quality and water quanity of a water body that receives it. Although these systems are classified as johkasou systems under the johkasou Law, one important feature of these systems is that resulting sludge from treatment plants can be used as fertilizer for agriculture within the local areas.
The abrasion, looseness, changes of shape, cracks,leakages(blower oil,etc), abnormal sounds,etc.,can be the causes of malfunction which may results in accidents.We keep periodical maintenance.
Both "Johkasou systems" and "Sewerage systems" are good tools for domestic wastewater treatment. Considering the situation, "Johkasou systems" are resilient infrastructure.

Phosphorus removal in small-scale johkasou is performed by a chemical reaction between iron ions and phosphate ions that generates insoluble iron phosphate. This will then react with oxygen dissolved in the water and insoluble phosphate ion will finally be materialized in the sediment. Then insoluble phosphate ion will go to Anaerobic tank.As the electrodes wear with time,they will need to be changed periodically.

Compact type/ JAPAN
This has dramatically increased the number of johkasou. However, there are some compact type johkasou with no flow equalization function or water reacirculation function.
Number of users for design(NUD)
A value calculated by JIS A 3302, to determine the population equivalent for the capacity of a johkasou to be installed/constructed. A NUD is equal to the unit of pollutant load for johkasou, which is defined to be 200L/cap. day for wastewater amount,40 g/cap. day for BOD loads, 10g/cap. day for nitrogen loads and 1 g/cap. day for phosphorus loads.

Material of Johkasou
Most small scale johkasou are made of plastics such as FRP or DCPC(Dicyclopentadiene) at factories. As medium to large scale joukasou are mainly built of reinforced concrete at sites of installation,the same precautions taken in constructing an ordinary wastewater treatment facility must be observed.
Operation and Maintenance/JAPAN

Gappei-shori johkasou
A johkasou that is designed for treating domestic wastewater, usually used to distinguish this device from tandoku-shori johkasou.
"Gappei means combined and "shori" means treatment in Japanese, while "johka" means purification,"sou" means tanks.
Large-scale johkasou
A johkasou having a NUD of 501 or more, usually made of reinforced concrete on installation site for treatment of domestic wastewater from a village or several buildings.
Rural sewerage system
One of the domestic wastewater treatment systems in japan,for small centralized treatment in rural areas; it is classified as a johkasou by the johkasou Law.
